On May 7, 2025, India initiated “Operation Sindoor,” a series of missile strikes targeting nine locations across Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir. The Indian Ministry of Defence stated that the operation aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure linked to groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 Hindu tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir. The strikes reportedly hit areas including Muzaffarabad, Bahawalpur, and Kotli, with at least nine Pakistani civilians, including a child, confirmed dead .

Pakistan condemned the strikes as an “act of war,” asserting that Indian missiles targeted civilian sites, including a mosque in Bahawalpur. In retaliation, Pakistan claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets and a drone, with one Indian JF-17 aircraft reportedly crashing in Pulwama, India .

The conflict has led to heightened military activity on both sides. Pakistan declared a state of emergency in affected regions and vowed to respond “at the time and place of our own choosing.” The Pakistani military has been placed on high alert, and airspace closures have disrupted civilian flights .

In India, the government initiated “Operation Abhyaas,” a nationwide civil defense drill involving 244 districts, testing air raid sirens, bomb shelters, and emergency response protocols .

🌐 International Reactions .
The international community has expressed concern over the escalating conflict. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for maximum restraint from both India and Pakistan, warning that the world cannot afford a military confrontation between the two nations . Former U.S. President Donald Trump described the Indian strikes as “a shame,” urging for a swift de-escalation .

📍 Impact on Civilian Life .
The ongoing hostilities have severely affected civilian life. Flights have been canceled, schools and airports closed, and residents in border regions are facing displacement and uncertainty. The situation remains fluid, with both nations bracing for potential further escalation.

The Indian Armed Forces on Wednesday (May 7, 2025) launched ‘Operation Sindoor’, hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, a government release read. “No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted,” the statement added. However, the terror camps said to have been targeted are linked to various banned outfits, including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen, according to probe agencies.

“Focused strikes were carried out on nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, targeting the roots of cross-border terror planning,” said MoD on X.

Pakistani army resorted to heavy mortar shelling on forward villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch and Rajouri. Officials said the shelling was reported from Krishna Ghati, Shahpur and Mankote in Poonch, Laam, Manjakote and Gambeer Brahmana in Rajouri district.

Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan will on Tuesday (May 6, 2025) review the preparations for strengthening civil defence mechanisms that include conducting mock drills on air-raid warning sirens, training civilians to protect themselves in the event of a “hostile attack” and cleaning bunkers and trenches.

Meanwhile, The United Nations Security Council has discussed rising tensions between India and Pakistan at closed-door consultations where envoys called for de-escalation and dialogue. The 15-member UNSC did not issue a statement after the meeting but Pakistan claimed that its own objectives were “largely served”.

Arathy, daughter of N. Ramachandran who was gunned down by terrorists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam, on Wednesday welcomed Indian Army’s “Operation Sindoor” and expressed hope that it would bring some relief to the families of those killed in front of them.

She also extended a “big salute” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian Army and the union government for the missile strikes against terror camps in Pakistan and Pak-occupied Kashmir.

Arathy’s father was killed by terrorists in front of her while holidaying in Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22.

Talking to reporters here, Arathy also said there won’t be any other suitable title for the strikes other than “Operation Sindoor”.
